Gasoline and diesel prices drop, water and electricity prices increase

Local | By Correspondent May 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Gasoline and diesel prices will significantly drop next week. Gasoline will decrease by nearly nine cents per liter, bringing the price at the pump to just under 2.20 guilders, down from the current 2.29 guilders. This announcement was made today by the regulatory authority, Bureau Post and Telecom.

Diesel will also see a significant drop, decreasing by twelve cents per liter. Currently priced at approximately 1.85 guilders, it will drop to around 1.73 guilders starting Tuesday. The reduction in fuel prices from May 28 is primarily due to lower purchase prices by Curoil.

Water and Electricity

In contrast, water and electricity prices will increase from June 1. For the first nine cubic meters, consumers will pay nearly 8.77 guilders per thousand liters of water, approximately seven cents more. For those who consume more than twenty cubic meters, the price will be 17.82 guilders per thousand liters above the initial twenty cubic meters.

Electricity prices, which were slightly over sixty cents per kilowatt-hour this month, will rise to approximately 66 cents per kilowatt-hour starting June 1, an increase of six cents for the first 250 kilowatt-hours. In the highest tariff bracket, for consumption exceeding 250 kilowatt-hours, the price will be nearly 81 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The increase in electricity tariffs is mainly due to higher average fuel costs for electricity production, combined with the expected production mix and a higher correction factor for April 2024. Additionally, the BOO plant (CRU) contributes to the required production capacity, which has a significant impact on the tariffs. The rise in water tariffs results from increased electricity costs for water production and a lower correction factor for April 2024.
