Fruit boats lead to lower prices in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent June 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The recent influx of boats carrying vegetables and fruits from Venezuela has resulted in more competitive pricing in Curaçao. Minister of Economic Development Ruisandro Cijntje reported that several traders have expressed concerns about being unable to match the low prices of livestock feed brought in by these boats.

Cijntje stated today that this is precisely the intended effect. He further mentioned that the prices of imported products could potentially decrease even more in the future.

The minister emphasized the need for a "zero measurement" to be conducted, which would allow for the comparison and establishment of concrete data on how prices have fallen. "What I am hearing is that prices are more competitive, and specifically, I have been informed that the prices of livestock feed are cheaper," Cijntje said.

This development is seen as a positive step towards making essential goods more affordable for the residents of Curaçao.
