Freedom Meals to Be Held Across Caribbean and Netherlands on May 5

| By Correspondent March 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Communities across the Caribbean islands and the Netherlands will come together on May 5 to celebrate freedom through so-called “Freedom Meals,” an initiative aimed at encouraging dialogue and connection.

The events, supported by the Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei, invite people to share a meal while reflecting on the meaning of freedom and society.

The concept behind a Freedom Meal is simple: people gather around one table to eat together and engage in conversation. These gatherings can take place in various settings, including community centers, libraries, public squares, or even private gardens.

Organizers say the initiative helps bring people closer together, fostering understanding and open discussions about shared values and experiences.

As part of the tradition, a special “Freedom Soup” is made available each year and can be served free of charge during the meals. Anyone is welcome to organize a Freedom Meal, whether with friends, colleagues, or neighbors.

Registration for participation and requests for support are now open, with more information available through the initiative’s official channels.
