Free waste disposal for the next two months

Local | By Correspondent September 2, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - For the next two months, residents will be able to dispose of their waste at the landfill for free. The Ministry of Finance will cover the associated costs. This announcement was made Friday morning following a meeting between Finance Minister Javier Silvania (MFK) and Selikor Director Wesey Kook.

Minister Silvania shared the news on his Facebook page, stating that everyone can now dispose of their waste at no charge. "If you dump your waste in nature or elsewhere, the government pays Selikor to clean it up. It’s better to bring your waste to the landfill for free," Silvania advised.

On Friday morning, truck drivers had blocked the entrance to the Malpais landfill in protest of the high fees they are required to pay for waste disposal.

Following the announcement that waste disposal would be free for the next two months, the drivers lifted their blockade and resumed their operations.
