Free sterilization and microchipping for dogs in Curaçao until the end of the year

Local | By Correspondent October 8, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Dogs on Curaçao can be sterilized and microchipped for free until the end of this year, thanks to government funding allocated to various foundations and organizations. Among the beneficiaries are Stichting DOG and Rescue Paws, who are conducting the procedures. Additionally, this week, the government announced that it is actively implementing the Animal Welfare Law.

The proposal for this animal welfare law was introduced about two and a half years ago by Giselle McWilliam, a member of the opposition party MAN. She expressed some surprise at the timing of the sterilization project, coming just six months before the elections, but she is pleased that action is finally being taken. “For me, animal welfare comes first in this case. Not everything is political for me. This is what we have fought for. Let’s hope that this initiative continues after December 31, when the free sterilizations end,” McWilliam said.

The project aims to address the overpopulation of dogs on the island, improving both the health and safety of animals while promoting responsible pet ownership.
