Free flu and COVID-19 vaccines for residents and vulnerable groups

Local | By Correspondent September 18, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Local residents over 60 years old, as well as winter visitors aged 60 and above, will soon have the opportunity to receive free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. The Public Health Department, in collaboration with local general practitioners, has organized two vaccination days, which will take place during the third and fourth weeks of the month at a central location.

In addition to seniors, people under 60 who are considered vulnerable due to underlying health conditions—such as diabetes, lung issues, or heart problems—are also eligible for these vaccines. Given their heightened risk of becoming seriously ill from the flu or COVID-19, and the possibility of requiring hospitalization, these individuals are encouraged to take advantage of the vaccination program.

The initiative follows advice from the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport, along with recommendations from the Health Council and the Public Health Department. The vaccination program is being offered on the BES islands to protect both the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

The exact dates and locations for the two vaccination days will be announced shortly. After these designated days, residents can still receive their flu and COVID-19 vaccines by appointment at their local doctor's office during scheduled times.

Public health officials are urging all eligible individuals to get vaccinated to protect themselves and reduce the strain on healthcare services during the flu season.
