Fred Rutten to Lead Curaçao at World Cup After Dick Advocaat Steps Down

| By Correspondent February 23, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Fred Rutten will lead Curaçao at the upcoming World Cup this summer, taking over as head coach after Dick Advocaat stepped down due to family circumstances. Advocaat has withdrawn from his duties following health concerns involving his daughter.

Rutten confirmed that he will continue along the same sporting path set out by his predecessor. “It is an honor to carry on his work,” Rutten said in an initial response. “I have spoken with Dick and his staff and will continue in the same line. It is a sad situation for Dick, but Curaçao can expect the same level of commitment from me.”

Advocaat made history with the Curaçao national team by guiding the island to its first-ever World Cup qualification, making Curaçao the smallest country to reach the tournament. His tenure is widely regarded as a milestone in the island’s football history.

Rutten now faces an immediate sporting challenge. Curaçao has been drawn into a demanding group alongside Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast. Preparations for the tournament are expected to continue largely along the existing technical and tactical framework established under Advocaat.

For Rutten, who hails from Overdinkel, this marks his first appointment as a national team head coach. He inherits a squad that has already exceeded expectations on the world stage and will be tasked with building on that historic achievement during the World Cup.

The Curaçao Football Federation has not yet announced whether additional changes will be made to the technical staff following Advocaat’s departure.
