WILLEMSTAD - This week, the Kitten Rescue Curaçao Foundation marked a milestone in its ongoing commitment to animal welfare. Veterinarian Piet Hellemans, an ambassador for the foundation, sterilized the one-thousandth cat of the year. In line with previous years, the foundation once again succeeded in sterilizing over 1000 cats, including those owned by individuals with limited financial means and stray cats.
The goal of these sterilization efforts is twofold: to prevent unwanted births and to strive for a healthy balance in the number of cats on the island. The Kitten Rescue Curaçao Foundation recognizes mass sterilization as the most effective approach to improving animal welfare and reducing the number of stray animals on the streets.
After completing the one-thousandth sterilization project, Piet Hellemans presented a check to Miriam and Marcel, the passionate founders of this successful sterilization campaign. The generous contribution from the DierenLot Foundation and the Abri voor Dieren Foundation, amounting to 43,563 euros (over 86,000 ANG), is specifically designated for the sterilization and chipping of cats in 2024.
With the support of this generous contribution, the Kitten Rescue Curaçao Foundation aims to sterilize a minimum of 1000 cats again in 2024, with the assistance of volunteer Dutch veterinarians. Additionally, the foundation plans to intensify collaboration with local veterinarians, with the goal of performing an even greater number of sterilizations. This local collaboration is a top priority for the foundation in the coming year.
