Foundation calls for reflection on autonomy and division between Curaçao and St. Maarten

Local | By Press release August 12, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Foundation "Kòrsou on the Path to Freedom" is using its platform to address the growing division between Curaçao and St. Maarten, emphasizing that this rift could have been avoided during the negotiations for autonomy within the Dutch Kingdom on 10-10-'10. The foundation argues that the autonomy granted to the islands is a colonial structure imposed by the Netherlands after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, comparing it to "jumping out of the frying pan into the fire."

According to the foundation, the option of autonomy was accepted without sufficient investigation, not realizing that this structure was just one possibility and that the 193 member nations of the United Nations had not included autonomy in their guidelines. If the political leaders of that time had pushed for decolonization instead of autonomy, the foundation believes the islands would now be sovereign, each with its own central bank, and without the current division.

The foundation aims to raise awareness among politicians about the increasing discontent, disappointment, division, and poverty that have grown during the 14 years of autonomy. They argue that too often, the promise of financial gain has led to compromising principles, ultimately harming the citizens. The foundation is calling for a move towards true decolonization, urging the people of Curaçao to stand on their own feet and work towards a united and prosperous future.
