Nico Cornelisse's name has become synonymous with gastronomic excellence on the island. Since 1981, he passionately managed the upscale restaurant in Scharloo, known as The Wine Cellar. Here, he combined French cuisine with a Caribbean flair, a fusion that was well-received by both tourists and the local population.

Not only a prominent chef, but also a wine connoisseur, Cornelisse was a key figure within the prestigious culinary organization Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, headquartered in Paris. He served as the Bailli Délégué for the Caribbean region, a role that drew comparisons to a cardinal in the Catholic church. His influence extended beyond his restaurant, as he shared his passion for culinary art with others and even organized wine tasting lessons for enthusiasts.

Beyond the culinary world, Cornelisse also brought his expertise to the realm of politics. Between 2007 and 2010, he served as a member of the Island Council of Curaçao on behalf of the PAR party. His unwavering determination and critical thinking within the council showcased his commitment to contributing to an autonomous Curaçao. His friend and fellow culinary enthusiast, Gerold Rach, remembers Cornelisse as someone who always expressed his own opinions and stood by his beliefs, even under pressure.

Nico Cornelisse's legacy will endure through his contributions to the culinary scene and his dedication to the island. His children have inherited his passion, with son Daniel taking charge of the wines and bar at The Wine Cellar, son Anton forging his own path with the Asian restaurant Soi95, and son Thomas recently leading Chanterelle Bistro.

The island bids farewell to a man who delighted taste buds and enriched the political landscape. Nico Cornelisse will be remembered as a culinary visionary and a resolute politician who made his mark on Curaçao and touched the hearts of many.
