Former PNP Parliamentarian Criticizes Use of Public Funds for Campaigning

Local | By Correspondent January 9, 2025

WILLEMSTADFormer PNP Member of Parliament Elvin Gerard has voiced his disapproval of the way ministers from the Pisas II Cabinet are using public funds for campaign purposes.

Gerard is particularly critical of the elaborate videos aired on television and shared on social media, where ministers highlight their achievements over the past year. According to him, these efforts constitute political advertising that should not be financed with public funds.

The former parliamentarian is demanding transparency regarding the amount of money being spent on these campaigns. "Such campaigns should be funded by the political parties' election budgets, not taxpayer money," Gerard asserted.

Gerard’s criticism comes as election preparations are underway, with concerns growing about the use of government resources for political gain. His call for accountability has sparked a broader debate about ethical campaign practices on the island.
