Former MP Low Martines to Remain in Custody Amid Drug Smuggling and Money Laundering Investigation

Local | By Correspondent January 29, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The court has ruled again that former parliamentarian Low Martines will remain in custody for an additional 30 days. Martines was arrested on November 5 and has since been detained on suspicion of drug smuggling and money laundering as part of the ongoing investigation codenamed Operation BLEDA. The Public Prosecutor's Office (OM) requested an extension of his pre-trial detention, which the court has granted.

Martines’ lawyer filed a motion to suspend his pre-trial detention, but the court rejected the request again. As a result, Martines will remain in detention for the time being.

Serious Allegations Under Investigation

The OM emphasized that the extension of Martines’ detention underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the importance of the investigation. “This case is part of a broader criminal investigation into large-scale organized crime,” the OM stated.

Martines, a former member of parliament, is considered a key suspect in the case. Prosecutors allege that his involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering plays a central role in the ongoing investigation.

A High-Profile Case

The detention of a former parliamentarian has drawn significant public attention, highlighting the gravity of the allegations and the scale of the criminal activities under investigation. Operation BLEDA is reportedly focused on dismantling a network involved in drug smuggling and financial crimes, with Martines allegedly playing a prominent role.

The OM has not disclosed further details about the investigation, citing the need to maintain the integrity of the ongoing probe. However, the extension of Martines’ detention suggests that authorities are building a substantial case against him and other suspects involved in the alleged criminal activities.

What’s Next?

As the investigation continues, Martines will remain in custody while authorities gather evidence and prepare for potential charges. The case has raised questions about the extent of organized crime on the island and the involvement of high-profile individuals.

The court’s decision to extend Martines’ detention again reflects the judiciary’s commitment to addressing serious criminal activities and ensuring that suspects are held accountable. However, Martines’ legal team is expected to continue challenging the detention as the case progresses.

Curaçao Chronicle will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
