Former DUO Students to Receive Refunds

Local | By Correspondent January 21, 2025

THE HAGUE Former students who studied under the Dutch student loan system between September 2015 and August 2023 may be eligible for financial compensation. Starting in January, the Education Executive Agency (DUO) will send personalized notifications to this group, informing them of the benefits they may qualify for.

The program aims to assist students who did not receive a basic grant during their studies and may have had to rely more heavily on loans. Two types of compensation are available: the Missed Basic Grant Compensation and the Study Voucher Compensation. One key requirement is that the student must have obtained a final diploma.

Missed Basic Grant

Eligible students will receive €34.17 per month for the duration they studied under the loan system. This amount will be automatically deducted from any outstanding student loans. If no debt exists, the amount will be paid directly to the former student.

Additionally, former students who began their studies during the first four years of the loan system are entitled to a one-time compensation of €2,098. This amount will also be applied to any outstanding student loans or paid directly if no debt remains.

Self-Application Required for Some

Eligible former students will automatically receive a notification from DUO in January, provided their details are registered with the agency. Those who obtain their diploma later will be notified after their educational institution submits the necessary diploma information.

Students who did not use student financing or the student travel product must apply for the Missed Basic Grant Compensation themselves. DUO encourages this group to submit their applications through official channels.
