WILLEMSTAD – The first phase of Curaçao’s renewed zoo has officially opened, featuring a brand-new petting zoo. This initial section includes fifteen spacious animal enclosures, separated by walkways for visitors. The petting zoo is now home to a variety of animals, including chickens, ducks, goats, pigs, turtles, donkeys, and horses. The official public opening is set for mid-April during the Easter holiday.

Following this first phase, efforts will continue on a broader redevelopment of the zoo. The vision is to transform the area into a park that is accessible to all residents of Curaçao. Beyond serving as a home for animals, the park aims to become a social gathering space where children can play, families can spend time together, and senior citizens can engage in activities. Additionally, people with intellectual disabilities will be given opportunities to play an active role in the new park.
The redesigned zoo places a strong emphasis on animal welfare. Instead of being kept in small cages, animals will live in open spaces with natural environments and water barriers. Education is also a key focus, with school groups set to receive lessons on nature, native and exotic species, and Curaçao’s biodiversity.
With this redevelopment, the zoo is set to become not only an attraction for animal lovers but also an inclusive community space promoting conservation and education.
