WILLEMSTAD - Several fireworks importers in Curaçao have sourced their products from the United States due to significant delays in shipments from China. Five containers, each approximately 6 meters by 2.5 meters, have already arrived on the island to address the shortfall.
Fireworks shipments from China, which typically make up the bulk of Curaçao’s annual stock, are facing logistical challenges. These containers must first pass through Jamaica, where heavy port congestion is delaying their transfer. As a result, only a portion of the fireworks stock is expected to arrive in time for the end-of-year celebrations.
In October, Fireworks News warned of a potential shortage, citing global supply chain issues and bottlenecks at key ports. Importer Sabir Attaf, one of Curaçao’s largest suppliers, confirmed that the island will receive just six of the usual 21 containers from China this year. To compensate, unsold stock from the previous year will be made available for purchase.
The delays have forced importers to explore alternative markets like the United States to meet demand. Despite the challenges, local vendors are working to ensure sufficient supply for Curaçao’s festive traditions, though the selection may be more limited than in past years.
