Firework sales begin in Curaçao amidst inspection challenges

Local | By Correspondent December 28, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Firework enthusiasts in Curaçao eagerly awaited the commencement of firework sales on Wednesday, anticipating a dazzling celebration. However, the Multidisciplinary Team, responsible for ensuring safety and compliance, encountered challenges during inspections on Tuesday.

Out of the 24 locations inspected, only four were deemed ready to begin sales. The remaining establishments fell short of meeting all the required safety and operational standards, as reported by the Multidisciplinary Team.

The inspections were carried out by a collaborative effort involving various entities, including MEO, SBAB, KPC, SOAW (safety section), UBW, OW, and the fire department. Concerns were raised as several sales points were found lacking in essential safety equipment such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers.

Hygiene was also a focal point during the inspections, with a thorough check for the presence of adequate toilet facilities for the staff. These measures aim to ensure a secure and well-managed environment for both vendors and customers.

One notable incident involved the removal of damaged fireworks at one sales point. Fireworks that had come into contact with water were promptly taken from the storage space and returned to the designated powder magazine, highlighting the commitment to safety protocols.

Looking ahead, the Multidisciplinary Team is set to continue its inspections in the coming days. Their objective is to address deficiencies and guarantee the safe and smooth execution of firework sales on the island. As the celebration draws near, authorities remain vigilant to create an environment that fosters both enjoyment and safety for all.
