WILLEMSTAD - The University of Curaçao (UoC) finds itself grappling with a series of pressing issues, including financial shortfalls, a decline in staff numbers, and a drop in student enrollment. These concerns were highlighted during a recent presentation to the Parliament by UoC's rector, Francis de Lanoy.
Amidst these challenges, the year 2020, dominated by the pandemic, stands as an exception when UoC managed to secure some profit. However, beyond this exceptional period, the financial landscape for the university has been somber over recent years. The diminishing number of students embarking on their academic journeys has led to a notable decrease in revenue.
Notably, one of the institution's most substantial expenses is personnel. Yet, paradoxically, the university reports that it is also facing staff attrition due to the inability of its collective agreements to match those of comparable roles in foreign institutions.
De Lanoy remains optimistic about the university's sustainability, with hopes pinned on governmental support. Nevertheless, the current prognosis paints a rather bleak picture, as indicated by the rector.
