WILLEMSTAD - Finance Minister Javier Silvania is very pleased with the letter he received last week from Dutch State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen. He sees the letter as 'a great show of support.' According to Silvania, he did not always receive such support from his own council of ministers. Van Huffelen stated last week that she supports the minister in addressing the issues at the Curaçao tax authority.
The State Secretary for Kingdom Relations said in her letter that the Curaçao community deserves proper tax collection. She referred to the irregularities found at the tax authority as 'shocking.' The government accounting firm SOAB wrote in a report that serious irregularities occurred under the leadership of Receiver Alfonso Trona. This means that certain individuals or groups received benefits that did not apply to all taxpayers.
