Finance Minister Javier Silvania avoids parliamentary explanation on 3 billion guilder tax waiver

Local | By Correspondent September 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Finance Minister Javier Silvania (MFK) will not have to provide an explanation to Parliament on Tuesday regarding the 3 billion guilder tax waiver. Opposition parties PAR and MAN-PIN have requested the cancellation of the meeting.

Concerns persist about possible favoritism towards certain companies, which has sparked significant discussion on social media and within the community. The opposition initially called for a meeting to address these concerns but withdrew the request after receiving the necessary documents for the meeting only at 6:00 PM on Monday.

PAR and MAN-PIN have accused Silvania of strategically delaying the delivery of documents. The parties stated that the late arrival of these documents left them insufficient time to prepare and thus asked Parliament Chairwoman Charetti America-Francisca (MFK) to cancel the meeting.

Many people are questioning the role played by the Ministry of Finance and its staff in the tax waiver. Additionally, the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM) has faced criticism for reportedly not launching an investigation into the matter.
