PHILIPSBURG – Economic experts from Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten gathered in Philipsburg to discuss strategies for building a sustainable economic future for the three islands. The event, titled "Taking the Reins: Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten – Driving Their Economic Future," was organized under the framework of the Temporary Work Organization (TWO)—the successor to COHO, the Dutch development program initiated in response to the COVID-19 financial aid provided to the islands.

Speaking at the event, Lennard Nijenhuis of the TWO explained that the discussions were guided by the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) framework—an internationally recognized model for strengthening island economies. “This provides a shared vision and strategy for building resilient economies. Over the coming days, we will focus on strengthening partnerships and encouraging innovative ideas. Our goal is to produce a joint declaration outlining concrete next steps,” Nijenhuis stated.
Hosting the event, Minister Grisha Heyliger-Marten emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making for economic growth. “Policy decisions must be based on facts, not assumptions. We need to look beyond politics and implement measures that genuinely support the future of our people,” she stressed.
The discussions aim to foster regional collaboration and economic resilience, ensuring that the islands take proactive steps toward long-term sustainability.
