| By Correspondent March 13, 2026

THE HAGUE – The Caribbean territories of the Kingdom, including Curaçao, are increasingly viewed as strategically important partners for the European Union, according to the Dutch government.

In written responses to parliament, State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Eric van der Burg said the EU recognizes the geopolitical value of the region and is considering increased investment through the new framework for Overseas Countries and Territories.

The European Commission has proposed expanding funding programs and strengthening cooperation with overseas territories as part of its broader Global Gateway strategy.

The Dutch government says it will continue emphasizing the strategic importance of the Caribbean during negotiations with the European Commission, particularly in light of regional geopolitical developments such as the situation in Venezuela.

Officials believe stronger EU engagement could increase the presence of European initiatives in the region and support economic development on the islands.
