EU Proposes to Nearly Double Funding for Overseas Territories, Including the Dutch Caribbean

BRUSSELS, WILLEMSTAD - The European Union plans to nearly double its budget for overseas territories, including the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The European Commission has proposed allocating a total of €999 million between 2028 and 2034 to support projects focused on climate resilience, digital connectivity, education, tourism, and food security across the so-called Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs).

The new proposal represents a significant increase compared to the current funding period and aims to strengthen the EU’s partnership with its overseas regions, which face unique environmental and economic challenges.

In addition to expanding the available funds, the European Commission also plans to simplify the procedures for requesting financial support, making it easier for territories such as Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten to access EU development funds.

According to EU officials, the goal is to “build more sustainable, connected, and resilient communities” in the overseas territories while promoting innovation and local economic growth. The proposal will be discussed by member states and the European Parliament in the coming months.
