Entire board of Fundashon Marshe resigns amid financial mismanagement allegations

WILLEMSTAD - The entire board of Fundashon Marshe, the organization responsible for managing Curaçao's markets, has resigned following the suspension of its director, Liezelot Braaf. Minister Charles Cooper (MFK) has announced plans to appoint a new board through a formal process adhering to corporate governance standards.

Leadership Turmoil

Minister Cooper, who currently oversees the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) in addition to his role as Minister of Traffic, Transport, and Urban Planning (VVRP), took charge of Fundashon Marshe after the resignation of former Minister Ruisandro Cijntje.

Initially, Cooper considered establishing a task force to investigate the foundation's operations, citing substantial expenses and mounting debts. He criticized the board and management for poor financial oversight and cost control, demanding a detailed accountability report by a set deadline.

Shortly after this ultimatum, the board resigned en masse, leaving Cooper to initiate the process of appointing new leadership. Meanwhile, the suspended director remains under investigation.

Market Renovation Challenges

The board’s resignation coincides with ongoing renovations at the Plaza Nobo, also known as the New Market or Ronde Markt. The market has been temporarily cleared, forcing vendors to relocate to outdoor spaces near the Cpost headquarters in Punda and the Waaigat parking lot.

Market vendors have voiced strong dissatisfaction with how the evacuation and renovation process were handled. Complaints include inadequate communication and support from the foundation's leadership.

Previously, former Minister Cijntje defended the board and management, asserting that they had sufficiently informed vendors about the changes. However, vendor frustrations have persisted, further underscoring the need for new leadership to address ongoing challenges.

The Minister has emphasized the importance of restoring financial stability and rebuilding trust with stakeholders as Fundashon Marshe transitions to a new phase of governance.
