Egg shortage in Curaçao due to increased tourism and reduced production

Local | By Correspondent February 13, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The growth of tourism in Curaçao and a decline in egg production have resulted in a significant shortage of eggs on the island. Local hotels and restaurants, experiencing a surge, face an increasing demand that cannot be met by the current supply.

This problem is further compounded by a reduction in local egg production.

Information initially pointing to climatic conditions as the main cause, such as a heatwave that affected the island, leading to the death of many chickens, is now supplemented with a more comprehensive explanation.

A 'second opinion' from a chicken farmer and egg producer indicates an overall decline in egg production. The reasons for this decline are not clear.

Curaçao's booming tourism, with new hotels and hospitality businesses opening, directly impacts the local egg market. Traditional buyers like supermarkets, stores, and bakeries also feel the effects of this shortage.

The issue of the egg shortage is becoming more pressing, especially for the hospitality industry that relies on eggs for their breakfast services. The Curaçao market, which used an average of 100,000 eggs per day based on figures from a few years ago, is now experiencing a shift where increased tourist activity and reduced egg production disrupt the balance.
