WILLEMSTAD – Education employees have given their union, DOEN, a mandate to urgently request a meeting with the Minister of Governance, Planning and Public Service (BDP), Kimberly Lew-Jen-Tai. The decision was made during a general assembly held last Thursday, one day after the minister sent a letter to the union.
During the meeting, DOEN explained why education workers are entitled to an additional salary step increase dating back to August 2024, and how much the government still owes in arrears based on union calculations. The minister’s letter, dated September 3, 2025, prompted members to adopt a firm stance.
Attendees instructed DOEN’s leadership to set a strict deadline for talks with Lew-Jen-Tai, stressing they want to prevent another months-long delay in receiving a response.
Representatives of 70 schools were present at the assembly, where it was agreed that every team would be fully mobilized for the next gathering. The 20 schools that were absent will be contacted to ensure they also join the effort.
In addition, DOEN resolved to coordinate with other unions within the Central of Organized Workers (CGOA), since the minister referred to the CGOA’s role in her letter. Depending on Lew-Jen-Tai’s response, another general assembly will be convened to decide on further steps.
