Education Union DOEN advocates for a national tropical schedule

Local | By Correspondent September 8, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Education should implement a national tropical schedule for schools. From June to September, when it is extremely hot, schools should close earlier.

Currently, students are only allowed to leave early when the Meteorological Institute issues a yellow weather warning. According to the education union DOEN, this is disruptive. DOEN submitted this proposal earlier this week. Under a tropical schedule, primary schools would be allowed to close at half past eleven. In the event of an orange weather warning, schools would close at half past ten.

Different times would apply to secondary education, specifically one o'clock for a tropical schedule and 1 or 2 hours earlier for an orange weather warning. Within three to four years, all classrooms should have air conditioning. The national tropical schedule should be implemented until October 6th. After an evaluation, the Ministry of Education may decide to extend it.
