Education Minister Urges Schools to Prepare for Extreme Heat

WILLEMSTAD – Schools in Curaçao must take precautions to protect students and staff from extreme heat, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Sithree van Heydoorn has warned in a letter sent to school boards.

According to the Meteorological Department, unusually high temperatures are expected from Saturday evening, September 20, through Tuesday, September 23, combined with high humidity and low wind speeds.

Safeguarding Health and Safety

The minister stressed that school directors must adopt appropriate measures to safeguard the health and safety of both students and employees. He pointed to the health risks posed by extreme weather conditions and urged school organizations to remain alert and take preventive action in time.

The Meteorological Department will play a key role by providing up-to-date information on temperatures, humidity, and wind conditions. Schools will then be able to anticipate developments and adjust their measures accordingly.

Van Heydoorn added that the ministry, in cooperation with other relevant agencies, is closely monitoring the situation. Should additional steps become necessary, school boards will be informed immediately.

For the latest updates, the minister referred schools to official advisories issued by the Meteorological Department.
