WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao has officially opened the 2026–2027 school year, with the government promising further investments in teacher development, modern learning resources, safer schools and stronger cooperation between educators, parents and the wider community.

In a speech marking the start of the new academic year, the Minister of Education described education as the foundation on which Curaçao’s future is built and said the new school year should mark another step toward a stronger, more inclusive and future-proof education system.

According to the minister, improving education requires the involvement of everyone surrounding a child, from teachers and school leaders to parents and the community.

The minister said the government intends to continue strengthening the quality of education through professional development for educators, improved teaching materials and greater attention to creating safe learning environments.

The speech also emphasized the importance of ensuring that students feel seen and heard at school and are challenged to develop their abilities.

“Every child deserves a school where he or she is seen, heard and challenged to grow,” the minister said.

Teachers received particular recognition during the opening address. The minister described them as the “engine” of Curaçao’s education system and thanked them for their dedication, patience and commitment to their profession.

Parents were also urged to remain actively involved in their children’s education. According to the minister, schools cannot achieve their objectives alone and cooperation between the home and the classroom remains essential.

“Education only works when school and home work together,” the minister said, calling on parents to participate, contribute ideas and help strengthen the education system throughout the coming year.

Students, meanwhile, were encouraged to use the new school year to pursue their ambitions and develop their talents.

“This year belongs to you. Dare to dream, dare to try, dare to grow. Curaçao believes in you,” the minister told students.

The minister formally declared the 2026–2027 school year open and expressed the hope that every child, regardless of background, talent or challenges, will have an opportunity to develop and succeed.
