THE HAGUE – The Dutch Parliament has approved a motion by Raoul White (GroenLinks-PvdA) advocating increased climate aid for the CAS islands (Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten). The motion highlights the urgent climate challenges faced by small island states and calls for stronger support to address these issues. Only PVV, BBB, Forum for Democracy, and JA21 voted against the motion.
The motion acknowledges the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which emphasize the severe effects of climate change on small island nations despite their minimal contribution to global emissions. It criticizes the Dutch government’s limited allocation of approximately €18 million for climate policies in the Caribbean Netherlands for 2025, with plans to significantly reduce funding in subsequent years.
The approved motion urges the Dutch government to assess additional needs for effective climate policies on the islands and to share its findings with Parliament. This step aims to better equip the CAS countries in their fight against climate change’s adverse impacts.
