THE HAGUE - A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives has voted against reparations related to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. A motion submitted by MP Joost Eerdmans (JA21) was passed today with 80 votes in favor.
The motion was prompted by four claims directed at the Dutch state. Eerdmans argued in his proposal that "no one who suffered harm from the trans-Atlantic slave trade is still alive," and therefore called on the government not to proceed with reparations.
The motion was supported by the parliamentary factions of PVV, VVD, BBB, CDA, SGP, FvD, and JA21.
