Dutch Parliament Calls for Increased Pressure on Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten to Combat Corruption

Local | By Correspondent February 25, 2025

THE HAGUE – The Dutch House of Representatives has passed a motion urging the government to apply more pressure on Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten in the fight against corruption and fraud.

The motion, submitted by Member of Parliament Aukje de Vries (VVD), states that progress in tackling corruption on the islands has been insufficient and that consequences should be imposed if improvements are not made.

State Secretary for Kingdom Relations, Zsolt Szabó (PVV), acknowledged these concerns and pointed to ongoing discussions with Transparency International regarding an investigation into governance quality in the Caribbean countries.

The VVD is pushing the Dutch government to prioritize fraud prevention and integrity reinforcement in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. If the current measures fail to yield the desired results, stricter actions will need to follow.
