WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch naval vessel Zr.Ms. Friesland has intercepted a total of 4,200 kilograms of narcotics during three separate operations in the Caribbean Sea, the Dutch Caribbean Defense Command announced on Wednesday. The drug seizures took place on June 25 (two incidents) and July 3.
The smuggling boats—so-called go-fasts—were initially detected by a U.S. patrol aircraft and the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard. In response, Zr.Ms. Friesland deployed fast interceptor boats and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to carry out the interdictions.
The seized drug shipments consisted of 700 kg, 1,000 kg, and 2,500 kg respectively. All confiscated narcotics have been handed over to U.S. authorities for further investigation and processing.
Since late May, Zr.Ms. Friesland has been serving as the station ship in the region. In a short time, the vessel has already removed nearly 7,800 kilos of illegal contraband from the sea.
The Royal Netherlands Navy operates in close cooperation with the Coast Guard and U.S. Coast Guard, not only to combat drug trafficking but also to remain on standby for humanitarian missions and disaster response throughout the Caribbean.
