Dutch King and Queen congratulate Curaçao on historic World Cup qualification

WILLEMSTAD, THE HAGUE - The Dutch Royal Family has issued an official message congratulating Curaçao on its first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup, calling the achievement “fantastic” and a moment of “great pride” for the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands.

In a statement shared on social media, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima praised Curaçao’s national team — The Blue Waves — after their dramatic 0–0 draw against Jamaica secured the island a place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“After a nerve-wracking final phase, The Blue Waves qualify for the World Cup for the first time in history,” the message read. “As the smallest country ever, Curaçao will participate in next year’s tournament. It is fantastic that two countries of the Kingdom will compete for the world title next summer. With great pride, we congratulate Curaçao. Mashá pabien!

The message reflects a wave of joy and admiration across the Kingdom, with Curaçao’s qualification marking one of the most significant sporting achievements in its history.

With the Dutch national team also qualified, two teams from within the Kingdom of the Netherlands will appear on the world stage together for the first time — a symbolic milestone linking sport, identity, and unity across the Atlantic.
