Dutch Justice Minister Delays Response to Parliamentary Questions on Gun Violence in Curaçao

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – Dutch Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel has informed two members of the Dutch Parliament that he has not been able to respond in time to their questions regarding gun-related issues on Curaçao. The inquiries, submitted by Raoul White and Songül Mutluer of the GroenLinks–PvdA party, were raised through the State Secretary for Kingdom Relations and focused on the growing concerns over firearm-related violence on the island.

The two MPs sought clarity on the approach to illegal firearms in Curaçao, as well as information on prevention strategies and the number of youth arrests related to gun offenses.

In his response, Minister Van Weel indicated that further consultation is needed before he can provide detailed answers. He did not give a specific timeline for when the responses will be available.

The delay comes amid rising concern about public safety and youth involvement in violent crimes in Curaçao, prompting calls from both local and Dutch politicians for coordinated efforts within the Kingdom of the Netherlands to address the issue.
