Dutch Government Outlines Kingdom Relations on Energy, Infrastructure Cooperation

Local, | By Correspondent February 9, 2026

DEN HAAG — The Dutch government has clarified its position on possible cooperation with Curaçao on energy logistics and strategic infrastructure, amid speculation about the island’s evolving role in regional energy flows.

In answers to parliamentary questions, State Secretary Eddie van Marum reiterated that structural economic decisions remain within Curaçao’s autonomous competence. However, the Dutch government has supported efforts to strengthen energy infrastructure on the island in ways that align with broader Kingdom interests.

Recent initiatives cited in the response include support through schemes such as the SDE++ subsidy mechanism, which has helped fund improvements and expansions to energy systems, including grid upgrades and battery storage. This funding is aimed at making Curaçao’s energy supply more reliable and flexible, though it is not specifically tied to developing a transshipment hub for fossil fuels.

The state secretary also pointed to measures such as opening the BMKB-regeling to Curaçao businesses, improving access to financing for small and medium enterprises and bolstering economic development more broadly.

While it is too early to establish structured synergies between Dutch and Curaçao ports, logistics networks or research institutions related to energy, Van Marum said that the Dutch government is willing to continue discussions on how the Kingdom might collaborate in future scenarios that prove economically and strategically sustainable.

The reply also noted that any such cooperation must respect Curaçao’s autonomy and consider legal, regulatory, environmental and security implications within both the Kingdom and international frameworks.
