Dutch Defense Orders 13 Fast Interceptor Boats for Caribbean Operations

Local | By Correspondent March 12, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch Ministry of Defense has ordered thirteen high-speed vessels to replace the current FRISC (Fast Raiding Interception and Special Forces Craft) fleet. The new Future Fast Interceptors (FFI), built by De Haas Shipyards in Rotterdam, are designed for special operations by the Marine Corps and Army units, including those stationed in the Caribbean region of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Upgraded Capabilities for High-Intensity Missions

According to the Defense Ministry, the new vessels will be faster, more heavily armed, and equipped with advanced sensors and communication systems. Innovations in the hull and seating design will reduce impact shocks, minimizing physical strain on personnel during high-speed operations. Additionally, the FFIs are harder to detect and capable of handling high-intensity conflict missions.

Enhanced Operations in the Caribbean

Marine Corps units in Curaçao regularly conduct patrols, training exercises, and boarding operations in close collaboration with the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard. The FFI fleet will strengthen these efforts by providing enhanced capabilities for future regional security operations.

Boost for Dutch Maritime Industry

By selecting a Dutch shipbuilder, the Ministry of Defense aims to modernize the military fleet while also supporting the national maritime industry. The thirteen vessels are expected to be delivered within three and a half years, ensuring the Dutch armed forces remain at the forefront of maritime defense.
