WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch Ministry of Defense has significantly ramped up its presence and operations in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, according to its latest annual report. The number of military assistance requests rose notably in 2024, with a focus on public order, drug interdiction, and humanitarian aid.
The Royal Netherlands Navy and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee played an active role in responding to a wide range of events, including election-related unrest, oil spill incidents, Carnival celebrations, and severe weather emergencies. Nearly 16,000 kilograms of narcotics were intercepted as part of intensified maritime patrols and joint operations.
Defense spending in the region rose by more than €134 million, with most of the budget allocated to additional personnel and operational costs. The increase reflects the growing demand for military support in civil security and disaster response efforts across the Dutch Caribbean.
Additionally, cooperation with regional partners such as Colombia and the Dominican Republic has been strengthened. These partnerships are seen as key to improving regional stability and enhancing the Kingdom’s ability to respond quickly to cross-border threats and crises.
The report underscores the strategic importance of the Caribbean territories and the Defense Ministry’s continued commitment to their security and resilience.
