Local | By Correspondent January 8, 2025

WILLEMSTADThe Dutch Minister of Defense, Ruben Brekelmans, has commenced his introductory visit to the military units in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, starting on Curaçao.

“Our military personnel in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom protect the territory against geopolitical threats (including from neighboring Venezuela), combat drug and human trafficking, and support the islands' security. Proud to witness our vigilance and dedication here!” the minister shared on X (formerly Twitter).

During his visit, Brekelmans held a “good conversation” with U.S. Consul John McNamara in Willemstad. “We work closely with the United States to address challenges from Venezuela and to combat drug and human trafficking. The U.S. is our primary partner in ensuring stability and security in the region,” Brekelmans noted.

The minister is scheduled to continue his visit in Aruba tomorrow and conclude his Caribbean tour on Sint Maarten.
