Dutch Caribbean Islands Seek Better Access to Erasmus+ and EU Programs

Local, Caribbean, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 12, 2026

BRUSSELS – European lawmakers are pushing for easier access to major European Union programs for students, researchers and institutions in the Dutch Caribbean.

According to the report, members of the European Parliament want Overseas Countries and Territories to have improved access to programs such as Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe.

The proposal forms part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between the European Union and territories such as Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten.

Supporters argue that improved access would create more opportunities for Caribbean students to study abroad, participate in exchange programs and collaborate with European educational institutions.

The report also highlights calls for greater support for local capacity-building and workforce development to help Caribbean territories take advantage of European funding opportunities.

The issue is particularly relevant for Curaçao as local leaders continue to seek more opportunities for young people to gain international education and professional experience.
