SANTO DOMINGO - The Dominican Republic has suspended banana exports to control prices. Responsible minister, Joel Santos Echavarría, announced the decision following an extraordinary session of the National Council for Food and Food Sovereignty and Security. The measure takes effect today and must be reviewed within thirty days.
This measure is part of a broader strategy outlined in the National Development Strategy 2030. It stipulates that the Dominican state must ensure the productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability of agri-production chains with the goal of contributing to food security in the country.
The temporary suspension of exports could also impact the banana market in the Caribbean region, of which Curaçao is a part. It is currently unknown whether and how this decision will affect the availability and price of bananas in Curaçao.
