WILLEMSTAD - According to lawyers Eldon Sulvaran and Chester Peterson, it is "completely incomprehensible" that someone could practice law in a country without knowing the language of that country. The two made this statement during a technical briefing in parliament this week, where discussions were held about a new Law on Attorneys. Sulvaran and Peterson are advocating for the inclusion of a requirement that all lawyers working on the island must be able to speak Papiamentu.
They believe that no exceptions should be made to this rule, aiming to protect the local legal profession. Additionally, they argue that the interests of students studying law at the University of Curaçao should be safeguarded.
