WILLEMSTAD - The forced relocation of all market vendors and small entrepreneurs from Plaza Nobo has led to significant discontent among the traders. The building they occupy is undergoing renovations, and today they must vacate their stalls.
One of the vendors expressing her frustration is Morena Rosalinda Colòn. She has been selling food at Plaza for 35 years. Morena acknowledges that the building is no longer safe for traders and the public, but her concerns lie with the temporary solution that has been offered.
The vendors have now been assigned a space next to the post office to sell their goods, but Morena describes the conditions there as very unsanitary. She points to the presence of numerous pigeons in the area, as well as the lack of facilities to securely store their items.
Most vendors complain that they were promised various things, but as the relocation is taking place, it becomes clear that nothing has been arranged as promised. Safety was one of the commitments, yet nothing has materialized in that regard.
Liezelot, the director of the Fundashon Marshe, acknowledges the issue with the pigeons at the post office and reports that a pest control treatment has recently been applied to the area to drive away the birds.
Regarding logistical support, Liezelot assures that vendors will receive storage space in the post office and that tents will be set up outside where they can sell their goods. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance security to ensure the safety of the vendors.
