WILLEMSTAD – Digital accessibility is not only a social responsibility but also an economic necessity for the Dutch Caribbean, said Wesley Eleonora, Managing Director of SIM Caribbean, during a luncheon meeting of the Economenclub at ICUC.
Current State of Digitalization and Accessibility
Eleonora discussed the current state of digitalization and digital accessibility in the region, highlighting challenges such as infrastructure, digital skills, and collaboration. He also pointed out opportunities for more efficient government services, transparency, and inclusive communication.
Over 16,000 People with Disabilities
"Digital accessibility ensures that all residents, businesses, and visitors can access information and services. This is not only fair, but it also strengthens the entrepreneurial climate and makes our islands more attractive to tourists, investors, and international partners," said Eleonora.
According to data from Senso (CBS Curaçao), over 10% of the population—around 16,000 people—have a disability that could hinder their digital access. These include issues with memory or concentration, mental limitations, communication challenges, or sensory impairments.
Link to Tourism and Sustainability
Eleonora also made the connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly promoting sustainable economic growth and reducing inequality.
"Accessible websites and apps enhance the experience for travelers with disabilities and align with the ambition to position the Dutch Caribbean as an inclusive and sustainable destination," he noted.
Role of the Business Community
The presentation concluded with a discussion on how the business sector can contribute to providing digital and accessible information. Suggestions ranged from improving user experience to investing in innovative inclusion tools and providing feedback on public digital services.
SIM Caribbean has been supporting governments and public organizations in the Caribbean for over 16 years in their digital transformation efforts, focusing on accessibility and inclusive communication. The Economenclub Curaçao provides a platform for exchanging knowledge on current economic topics.
