Detention of Michelangelo 'Lo' Martines MP extended by investigating judge

Local | By Correspondent November 8, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Michelangelo 'Lo' Martines, Member of Parliament and leader of the KEM party, appeared yesterday before the investigating judge, who reviewed the legality of his arrest on November 5. The judge ruled that the arrest was lawful, meaning Martines will remain in custody for now. A substantive review of his detention is scheduled for eight days from now.

The KEM party is currently seeking clarity regarding Martines’ status in Parliament. Should he decide to step down, even temporarily, the party's second candidate, Anthony Godett, would take his seat in Parliament. This move could expedite the swearing-in of the KEM-nominated minister.

Martines, who is the founder and the sole representative of KEM in Parliament, was arrested two days ago on charges of money laundering and drug trafficking. His arrest has created uncertainty around the timeline for the appointment of the KEM minister. According to the constitution, it is not appropriate to swear in a minister without support from a parliamentary representative of the same party. Martines plans to keep the KEM leadership informed of his decision through his lawyer.

The case is being closely watched, as it could have significant implications for the party's political strategy and representation in government.
