Detention of former MP Martines extended by 60 days

Local | By Correspondent November 27, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The detention of former Member of Parliament Michelangelo ‘Lo’ Martines has been extended by 60 days. The examining magistrate approved the request for continued custody and rejected the defense's request for suspension.

Martines was arrested on November 5 as part of the criminal investigation 'Bleda,' which focuses on serious crimes such as drug trafficking and money laundering.

His pretrial detention had previously been extended by eight days.

This latest extension means Martines will remain in custody while the investigation into his alleged involvement in crimes committed in 2019, 2020, and 2023 continues.

In the meantime, Martines has submitted his resignation as a Member of Parliament, with Anthony Godett now occupying his seat.
