Despite improvements, there is still injustice in the education sector

WILLEMSTAD - On Labor Day, the education union 'DOEN' highlighted that education staff still do not receive what they are entitled to. This refers to the COVID-19 salary cut of 12.5 percent. After much pressure, the decision was made that teachers and other education employees will receive only 6 percent holiday pay.

Marbella Felipa, the union president, expressed her disbelief stating that it is incredible but true. She also noted that in June, ministers and members of parliament did receive 25 percent of their salary back.

Positive developments were also celebrated, including the reduction of working hours from around 14 hours a day in the nineteenth century to 8 hours a day in 1886. However, one of the union centers, Sentral Solidaridat Sindikal, pointed out that hours in the hospitality sector still run long. Apparently, in 2023, hospitality workers can still work 10-12 hour days.
