Demolition of Sentro Pro Arte Underway Amid Asbestos Concerns

WILLEMSTAD – The demolition of the long-abandoned Sentro Pro Arte theater is now in full swing, following the discovery of asbestos on the site. Authorities have cordoned off the area due to the associated health risks.

Sidney ‘BichoJustiana, chairman of the foundation overseeing the project, confirmed that a special plan is being developed to safely remove the hazardous material in close consultation with public health officials.

The once-iconic theater has been out of use since 2001 and was severely damaged by two separate fires. Its deteriorated condition has made renovation no longer feasible, prompting the decision to proceed with demolition and environmental cleanup.

The dismantling and clearing process is expected to take three to four months.

Meanwhile, plans for a new, modern theater on the same site are already in the works, signaling a cultural revival for the area.
