Deadline set for Curaçao Medical Center to address waiting list issue

Local | By Correspondent September 22, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has long been a concern for the Public Health Inspectorate due to patients facing difficulties in accessing medical care. In some cases, it has even been impossible to schedule appointments. Inspector-General of Public Health Sirving Keli has sent a letter to CMC, urging them to take action promptly.

There are instances where patients are told to call back in a few months to check for available appointments, or where the calendar is only open for bookings in 2024. More than 2700 patients are currently awaiting medical assistance, attributed to high costs and a shortage of adequate staff. There are also suggestions of an invisible waiting list.

On August 4, the Public Health Inspectorate urgently requested CMC to improve the situation and inform them by August 11. To date, there has been no response from the institution. Consequently, a deadline of October 2 has now been set for CMC to rectify the situation.

The inspectorate hopes that, this time, corrective measures will be taken to enhance access to medical care.
