D66 MP Boucke: Principle of "Loss & Damages" also applies in the Caribbean

Local | By Correspondent November 21, 2022

THE HAGUE - The principle of "Loss & Damages" that is being discussed during the COP27 climate summit in Egypt must also be applied to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. To this end, the MP Raoul Boucke of the D66 party calls on the Dutch cabinet.

"Loss & Damages" is a way to calculate climate damage and to determine reimbursements for poorer countries that hardly contribute to climate change, but who experience the consequences. According to Boucke after returning from the climate summit, this also applies to CAS countries and the BES islands.

“Our Kingdom is already being hit hard by the climate crisis. Colleague Jorien Wuite has often drawn attention to this. And it is precisely the Caribbean part of the Kingdom that is in danger of getting even more problems with floods and hurricanes if we do not achieve the climate goals. In March 2023 there is a climate conference on Aruba on the agenda. I call on the government to get started with the theme "Loss & Damages". The Netherlands can take the lead. "

The Netherlands is in favor of rich countries forming a fund that is used to help poor countries arm themselves against the effects of climate change.
