Customs Personnel Protest Over Bonuses and Working Conditions

Local | By Correspondent March 10, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Unrest is growing among customs officers following revelations that not all staff members have received a bonus. According to the morning newspaper Èxtra, customs officers feel they are being treated unfairly, especially since other departments within the tax office have been awarded bonuses. Finance Minister Javier Silvania (MFK) has refused to reward the entire customs team, despite their significant contribution to the country's tax revenues.

In addition to the dispute over the bonuses, the poor condition of the customs building at the Nieuwe Haven remains a major source of frustration. The building is in disrepair, and the health inspection warns that the issues could resurface within weeks. Despite numerous complaints, staff continue to work in the facility as no alternative has been found.

Labor unions ABVO and STrAF have come under criticism from some customs officers for not exerting enough pressure on the minister. Workers are now considering taking further action if a quick resolution is not reached. They demand not only a fair bonus but also clarification regarding their working conditions.

According to the customs officers, part of the solution could lie in renting a temporary building, but Minister Silvania is reportedly refusing to sign the contract. Without a structural solution, the situation within the customs department remains tense.
